My tank specs are...

60 gal Tank
30 gal sump/fuge
ASM G1X Skimmer
Quiet One 4000
2x175W MH and 2x 110 Actinc VHO

My tanks temperature has already gotten up to 84.5 the other day when it got into the 80's outside. I was wondering how many of you run a tank with MH and no chiller. How is this accomplished? If you think I will have no other option than getting a chiller which one is the best price/quality/ energy efficiency.

Thanks for the help.
Scott

i run dual 250's on my 60 gallon. i just have my oscillating fan on a timer, 30 minutes before my lights come on, the fan clicks on. in the summer, i run the ac. no chiller, no heat problems. off course the electric bill, that's another story.

Hey Cosmo,

Thanks. We dont have AC in that room. We have a small room AC in the den but its definately not going to impact the room where the tank is. Will the fan do the trick by itself?

evaporation = cooling
so the more fans you point towards the water, the more your temp should drop. You could also consider pointing a fan at your sump to help out.

Also, how ventilated is your canopy?
I've run an open-top 125g with MH just fine and had such a well-ventilated canopy that it didn't even need fans.

My 180 acrylic does need them though, due to a different canopy design & the fact that acrylic insulates more efficiently.

My canopy is 10" tall and has 2/3.5 fans installed and an open back.

i run an open top tank. my fan is about 5 feet away from the tank. i would run 2 of the 18" oscillating fans (the ones from walmart that are around $20) and place them closer to your tank. if you run a canopy, you could always use the clip on fans. gcarroll runs a couple on his tank. i think he got them at target. a couple in the canopy and one on the sump and you should be good to go.

Fans should both be blowing air in for maximum cooling with an open back.
You could also try angling both fans downward a bit so that they begin to blow across the water & increase evaporation.

And I was going to say something about clip-on fans on your sump, but I see cozmo1 beat me to it. :D

i think that quiet one pump is whats adding heat directly to the water... you have it submerged correct? the lighting only adds additional heat to the tank.

i have a 60 gal with 20 gal sump 250w halide + 24w x 2 T5's and my temp is always 79-80

I have two 80mm computer fans blowing into the water and my tank is always at 80. I havent dealt with this setup in summer temps but I think it will be fine since the fans have brought it down to 76 before.

What is the quietest fan you can get?

u can run the lights a few hours shorter per day. have the left side come on from say 12-5 and have the right one on from 4-9 etc.

Ok. Thanks guys I will most likely be in the market for a small chiller in the 1/10 range soon.
