Looks nice, I am doing one for someone else right now too. Just posted some pics of progress. I hinge only the front panel of canopy so as not to have to move lighting up and down. But besides that I think yours looks very professional... Good job.

Hello maximus and jaden1:

I like what you have built; very nice and professional looking!

I am looking to build some stands as well, and I'm just getting my feet wet in woodworking. Would either of you mind posting/PM-ing me the plans that you used to build the stands and canopies? Do you know of any other sites (I know garf.org has stand plan info) that would be good to look at as well?

Thanks in advance!

- Michael

maxius,
I could use some help on making the doors.

That's not shabby, Maxius - you're damn near a master craftsman.

What's the story with the crown molding, did you make it yourself or find some that matched the plywood?

drock, generally the deal with doors like that is to use a matching rail-and-stile router bit set. They generally come with a 1/2" shank, so you need a router than can handle them and a router table of some kind.

well the molding is stock pine from home depot
is the crow molding used for celings

it came in 12 foot legthsthats what i used at the bootom of the stand and the top of the canopie

on the top side of the stand i used3/4 cap moulding and caped it of from the top with a 1/2 ich trim to hide the ply wood

il post a pic of some samples as to how its put together..but i em in my workshp now....

workin on 240 bowfront::))

Looks great! I made my canopy a little different. I have the whole front panel open, two doors on the front open and the top open to make the access to lights easier.

ALSO USE FINISHING NAILS TO HOLD THE MOLDING IN PLACE DONT SINK THEM ALL THE WAY ONLY ENOUGH THAT IT WILL HOLD THE MOLDING IN PLACE

this will help with clue and you can also test fit all your pices before you glue them in place

brandon ill be installing external overflows on this set up

due to the fact that this tank is so narrow there is no room to put that overflow on the inside

they will be made of glass and will be mounted in both rear corners of the tank

here is a link to something simular:

and read the whole thing http://archive.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=446288

thats sweet if a company made overflows like that externaly in the back out of acrylic and made them look really nice they would make a lot of money

maxius,
So you think i should use glue as apposed to nails to hold the molding in place?

Also, i used a miter saw but just screwed it all up. Im having trouble getting the exact measurement with the angled cuts and all.

Ill give it another try tomorrow.

Maxius

make shure that the saw is set properly if not then ou will not get a straight cut

also if the stand is not squere or close to it youll have problems
use a sendig block to get the angle right

the first stand i build i did all the trim cuts by hand:..... with a hacksaw

what do you paint the inside of the stand with...i am in the process of building one out of 3/4 oak ply...its for a 75 gal

drock59

I simply put the same plywood in the inside as i did the outside and siliconed around the edges, so that water wouldnt get under the stand. The oak plywood, was stained and treated with minwax something or other. The stuff they use on boats and near water. Seals it up nice. All the pics should still work for this thread. Good luck and pm with any concerns.
