I have a 40gal cube and a Tunze Comline skimmer rated up to 100gals, and JBJ double compact. I want to have a fish only tank to get some experience in the hobby. The only thing that I feel I need is some type of filter.
I was told to go with a undergravel, CPR bak pak ect. What should I go with?
I want to keep a couple of clowns and maybe a tang.
Tank 24x24 cube (not drilled)

Thanks for the help,
Doug

Do you have a sump? Do you have Live Rock? If you don't have live rock and want to keep only fish then some sort of canister would work. I think the skimmer might be enough though. Clowns would be fine since they tend to stay in one place. IMO I would not put a tang in that small of a tank... There are so many other fish that would do well in that tank. Isn't a 24x24x24 a 60 gallon?

I have a Magnum 250 canister, would that work?
24x24x18 is the size sorry. I will not have live rock.
thanks Doug

The Magnum is a canister? THat would work. Don't overload the fish in there at first. Go slow.

I dont like canisters because they dont filter as good as other skimmers or a sump or something like that.

What sould I put in the canister for filtering material? Carbon, floss
or is there some type of bio ball I could use?

filter material could be floss or pads etc.. Doesn't really matter. IMO you should use some chemi Pure of high end carbon as well.. But that's up to you.

If you are going FO, how about an Emperor 400 (http://www.thatpetplace.com/Products/KW/emperor%2c400/Class//T1/F28+0221+0192/EDP/11638/Itemdy00.aspx). It provides chemical, biological and mechanical filtration at 400gph. It would be perfect for a 40 gallon FO tank. I have one on a 55 gallon freshwater tank and one on a 75 gallon FO salt tank that I just purchased. Great, reliable, cheap, and quiet filter.
