Worms in snadbed?

I was looking at my 29G the other night and noticed a really long, very thin worm looking thing in my sandbed. It was about 8-10 inches in length and appeared to be red in color. It may have just been dark in color and appeared red under my red headlamp. It was burrowing in the sand and was partially exposed by the glass. Is this thing good? Since then, I have also noticed them in my 12G. Sorry about the lack of pictures. They may be common, because they are in both tanks, but I just want to ask first. Thanks.
