Ammonia

I am trying to cycle my 250 gallon with 6 damsels and several dead shrimp over the past 3 weeks. I still can not get my ammonia to come up at all to start the process. I am showing 0 nitrites and 0 nitrates as well. Any suggestions.

You have live rock and/or live sand in there? Where is it from and how fresh is it?
Could be that with that much water volume you'll need more source ammonia, or could be the rock is handling things already.

We really need to know more about what is in there and where it came from.

I do not have any live rock and I have playground sand for my substrate. I am using a homemade wet/dry trickle system with about 5 gallons of bio-balls in a 50 gallon sump area. I have a Mag 3600 for a return. Thanks for your help in advance.
