I have a 72 gal bowfront and have used a mag 7 for 2 years. No problems!

Fine for saltwater. Not recommended for external use.

As far as I know the Mags are all rated for saltwater.

On the instructions I believe it says “not for external use; yet I see people doing it all the time on closed loops as well. No one seems to be complaining about their performance or safety thus far.

Must be a 'lawyer' thing like don't use a hair drier while in the shower...

I used a mag9.5 on a closed loop with no problems, then i switched it out for a mag7 it leaked, i had to seal the o-ring.
Marcs closed loop was a hang on, so you can test it for leaks, mine is drilled into the tank so i test the mags first before installing.
IMO there great external pumps when there not leaking.

I suspect you are looking at a Pondmaster, which is not recommended for salt water.

It is basically the same pump, but I assume there are some components that corrode in salt water.

mags are fine in saltwater. been using them for years like everyone else on these boards. best bang for your buck pump in the biz.

MAG 18, and MAG5 here, I have yet to have any issues. Might want to send them an email asking why the "not for extrenal" message there ...

./and then tell us .... :)

Damn R33f3r, what kind of purple coral is that? Sweet!

Heh, it's not a coral but a Stichodactyla Gigantea carpet anemone :)

That's beautiful, I need one! I have 2 tiger gobies that are constantly thrashing in the sand, and I can't put anything flat on the bottom otherwise they constantly cover it with sand, etc. Obviously one of these bad boys is big enough where it won't get covered, but would that type of thing stress it out?

Sorry, don't mean to hijack the thread!

It might eat your fish infact, besides that, you HAVE to have MH lighting and the "know how" on these anemones because they are the most difficult ones to keep. They usually ship very poorly and don't live too long if your water params are not close to perfect. They need alot of light and pretty strong waterflow. There are a few people here that have had great success with these anemones in the anemone forum!

Yeah I've got strong MHs, and pristine water. I've got 3 BTAs now that are doing awesomely. Anyway, thanks for the info. I'll do lots of research before doing anything.

it may have been the "pond Master" version. i may have mistaken it for a regular mag.. could have sworn that i read it on a sponsers web page. and that is a very beautiful anemone.

I have been running the "Pondmaster" Mag 7 on my 72 bowfront for two years. Did not know there was a difference. It came with my original purchase of reef set up?

running 3 mags.2 external and 1 internal for 5yrs with no problems at all.

I thought the only difference in the PondMaster series was the longer power cord. From looking at them both, I don't see any other difference.

On my mag 9.5 pondmaster box it says for fresh or saltwater. I have two of these, one as the return and the other as a closed loop. The newest 9.5 that I got did come with a notice that the impeller should be cleaned every 6 weeks if used for a marine set up because of the potential calcium build up.

I thought that metal shouldn't go in salt water. Mags do have metal screws and they rust. Can this be a bad thing?

hammerhead

They should not rust. They should be SS. You can replace these screws with plastic/teflon ones or get 400ss screws

They are fine for saltwater, But not recommended for external use
