Looks kinda like a gorgonian instead of a leather. I have one that is similar...like you said, hard to tell.

Possible, but it's not anything like the one grogonian I had. This "thing" feels just like the stem of a toadstool...rough, yet somewhat spongy (!?!) - some people mentioned that it looked very similar to their cabbage leathers....I think that would seem more like it, but I honestly have no clue...I posted it in the coral forum, so hopefully someone will know and reply. :)

Hmmm...I don't agree with cabbage leather, at least not if you mean sinularia dura. I have 2 different varieties of that and they look nothing like what you picture. The gorgonian I have (I think it's called sea rod) is brown and very fleshy...about the diameter of my little finger. The only hard part is a tiny (1-2mm diameter) rod that runs down the middle of the coral. I'll try post a pic for you. Jason

I could be wrong, but I really don't think it is a gorgonian.

Here is a poor shot of my Gorgonian (Sea Rod). It has polyps out here, but when they are in it looks just like your coral in question.
