Have any of you ever had problems with a mag-float cleaner?

I had a magnet cleaner made by Hagen, but it actually started to rust, and I guess I have to get a new one unless anyone knows how to get rid of the rust.

Also, any tips on getting rust off glass?

Same thing happened to me with the Hagen glass cleaner. One day i woke up and my tank was so murky i couldnt see through to the other side, and sure enough i took the cleaner out and it was rusting like crazy. I havent really tried to get the stain off the glass because i was lucky and you cant even see the stain because of its spot in the tank. I havent had a Mag Float yet, but i will soon since the Hagen one is ruined.

I've seen Hagens do that too: Mag-Floats are not supposed to do that...

The method for removing rust includes soaking in a citric acid solution... Not good for the aquarium. Sorry that is the only one I know.

Maybe you could polish it out.

How long did you have it before that happened?

I have had a mag for a long time as well, 2 of them. Thats why I am so curious as to how long these hagens last.

I am on my second Mag-Float... It stays in the tank for the most part, the worst thing about them is the kids tried to help, and there was sand stuck on it... Nice scratches :( ... TheBimbo:rollface:

Those of you that haven't had problems with mag-floats--do you keep them submerged (or floating I guess) 24/7? And how long have you owned them?

My Hagen cleaner was in the tank 24/7 for about 4 months before it started to rust.

24/7 since last feb in salt, 24/7 for wow maybe a year or more in fresh.

24/7 for a year now in salt tank, 24/7 for two years in fresh water tank. Completely submerged the hole time and absolutely no problems with the mag floats.

ditto.. i love my mag float.. i am planning on getting a second one for the back wall (my tank is open all the way around) it would be easier than taking it off to put it on the back..

Thanks for the responses about the magfloats. I'll be picking one up this weekend definitely.

Back to the Hagen cleaner, I contacted them about the problem and responded with this:

"Dear Ross,

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We have been manufacturing this product for many years and this has never been brought up in the past. Most people do not leave the algae magnets on the glass when they are not using it. However, I have passed your message along to our marketing team so they can look into improving the instructions. Please accept our apologies for the inconvenience you have experienced.

Thank you,
Sharon Emond, Customer Service Dept.
Rolf C. Hagen (USA) Corp. "

Hopefully they'll look into a fix for the problem as well.

I wonder if now I send them the same thing if she once again says they never heard of that problem before. How did you send them the email?
