Hi Doc. I was wondering what the largest species of mantis shrimp is? I was at the LFS the other day and they have a customer that claims he has a mantis that is 13 inches long. Is this possible? The store has a molt of the front appendages and they are huge. It is definetly a piercer because of the shape of the appendages. The guy happened to be in the store and says that the mantis has a 55 gallon all to himself. If what he is claiming is true, I didn't realize that they got that big. Thanks a lot.

Hi,

The reference listed below indicates that the largest ones reach lengths of about 55 cm (about 22 inches).

McLaughlin, P. A. 1980. The Comparative Morphology of Recent Crustacea. W. H. Freeman and Co. San Francisco. 177 pp.

Makes 55 gallon feel kind of small :D

Thanks a lot. I had read elsewhere that they only grew to 30cm, but I saw a picture of one that was over a foot long. Thanks for clearing that up for me.
