I have a 4 by 110 watt VHO retrofit system from http://www.hellolights.com on my 55. I like it very much. The system with bulbs costs ~$250 and I can keep just about whatever I want under it. The only iffy things would be maxima or crocea clams and I have heard of several people keeping those higher up. Deresa's and squamosa's do fine under that setup. If you don't have a canopy you can get an all glass pine canopy from Sean and Robert for about $65 I think. That is what I have. IMO you can't beat that setup for the price. If you want to go MH you might consider a couple of HQI pendants. That would work very well but would cost quite a bit more.

Forgot to mention if you go with the VHO's definately go with the URI bulbs:-)

Coralife now has the 48" strips in 96 watt per bulb. I here alot of different things regarding PC Compact vs VHO, but I have been very happy with my 65 Watt 48" PC compact strip.
Either way, I get from the same people Hello gets there's from.

go with 2 250 hqi's and never look back, especially at that $600+ it will cost you :P thats the only thing keeping me from converting my 55...$300 more in lights. Oh yeah and the new skimmer, rock, sand, salt, etc, etc it would take. I knew there was something else :)

4 110 watt VHO's would work well over your tank and allow you to keep just about anything you want to. Cost about $300(canopy included)
2 250 watt HQI's is overkill over your tank IMO unless you really plan on getting into a mainly sps tank(this will also IMO require a better skimmer etc...). This will however give you alot of light and would also work over a tank as big as 120 gallons in case you want to upgrade in the future. You would be able to keep anything you wanted sps wise but some of your softies might need sunglasses. If you get halides you will probably want to get 14, 15 or 20k bulbs because with the HQI pendants you won't have atinic supplimentation. Another consideration with halides is heat although this shoule be minimal with pendants. cost over $600(these would also be pendants hanging over the top of your tank requiring you to keep the tank uncovered)
2 150 or 175 watt HQI's over your tank would also be a good choice IMO. They would be the same as above in all respects except the wattage would be a little lower. cost ~$500 for the 150's ~$600 for the 175's.
T5's would cost about the same as the halides to get the wattage of the VHO's. Halides would definately be the better choice between the two.
I hope this clears it up a little. It may just confuse you but lighting reef tanks can get about as confusing as you want it too. The really confusing part is there are so many different opinions it's sometimes hard to sort through it all. The bottom line IMO is that VHO's will give you the most bang for the buck, they are definately an upgrade for what you have and I know from having them over my 55 that you will be pleased:-)
good luck, Chris

Do you still have the lights? That is exactly what I have on my 55 gallon but I would like 2 more if you still have them. I just gave $80.00 for each at the lfs.

IMO 110 vho's are the most bang for the buck, and are very safe and simply to install and use. user friendly and like chris said will allow you a wide varity of corrals. some of the nicest tanks I have seen were vho only tanks.
