Is it possible to purchase bulkheads at Lowes or Home Depot? I think I need a 1" and 1/2"...

I've used a PVC male adapter and a female adapter with an o-ring that fits snugly around the male thread. It's nowhere near as solid as a real bulkhead fitting, but the parts are available at HD or Lowes. I got the idea from the cheap LFS nearby.

When you call, ask for tank adapters, another name for bulkheads.
If you go with the female & male pvc fittings, use electrical conduit fittings (light gray pvc). Those threads are not tapered, so you can screw them nice and tight.

I make mine out of 3/4" pvc fittings. I get a PVC 3/4" Male and a 3/4"threaded female to 3/4" hose fitting(Elle of course). I have used rubber flat gaskets with success. I have been trying "fun foam" from the arts and craft store. It is a dense closed cell foam of nontoxic manufacture made in sheets about 8 1/2" X 11".
I cut the gasket with a razor. Place the gasket on the inside of the tank. Teflon tape seals the threads.

The reason I use this size is because Harbor freight sells a 1" diamond hole saw bit for under $10.00. All you need is 1 1/16" hole. So I drill through then use the sides of the bit to enlarge the hole untill the threaded male fitting can pass easily.

Use teflon tape on the threads and it allows you to tighten them down easier.

Warning: I have never broken a tank while drilling but I have broken several while trying to tighten the bulkhead fitting too tight or without the teflon to make it easier.

On my latest setup, I'm using the gray PVC fittings found in the electrical section at Home Depot. Our local HD doesn't carry either "bulkheads" or "tank adapters" or any other description of them. I chose the electrical ones because they mount up flush to the container or aquarium wall. I use silicone on both sides of the wall for each fitting and have no worries about leaking. The usual PVC primer and glue works fine fitting up standard white PVC to the gray fittings. I just picked up a 2" Male and Female combo for under $2, which is definitely a bargain compared to online vendors asking $10 per bulkhead. Saved myself $80 with my newest setup this way.

yea i'm in orlando and neither lowe's or HD has them. in fact, after i found some at the LFS, i took them to HD to find pipe to fit them and the plumbing "expert" asked me what they were! just thought that was kinda funny. good luck in your search.
