View Full Version : What to do if volcano erupts?

Ok, so the talk of the region is that Mt. St. Helens might blow up again, and alot of us here are worried about how ash might effect our tanks. here in portland, we would probably experience some ash fallout, and I am curious if anyone knows of any solutions other than keeping the doors and windows closed to minimize any risk of contaminants getting into the tank. This is my solution, hopefully someone knows of something that will be a bit easier to implement...

Tarp the tank area and seal it well. Run a pipe with air flowing in and have an exit somewhere up top. use a filter to filter all air being sucked in. Only thing I can think of.

Btw, you should put the gas mask around the gil lol.

Shut all doors and windows and use air conditioner. If necessary tape all the windows. If your tank is in a room you can seal that room too.

But seriously if you run the airconditioner or just the blower for that matter and keep the house closed up that would filter the indoor air. Get plenty of extra filters as i asume they will clog quickly. also I'd turn off any airpumps if you have them for as long as you can

Definately seal the room and I'd follow what szwab said. I remember when Helen's did it the first time - I'm in Montana and it was a MESS..that stuff seemed to get into everything...Was really an eerie sight. I cant imagine what it must have been like closer to it. Sorry not much help.

What about putting one of these near your tank to keep the air clean:

This one is pretty expensive (cheaper ones can be found at Radio Shack that work pretty good), but it works wonders on keeping impurities out of the immediate area. Also, if you have filters on your AC/Heater units, perhaps you should refill them and have a couple extra ones on hand. You may be able to get finer grade filters to really strain the particles out.
