About a month ago someone mentioned in passing that Balls Pickling Lime was no longer available. I e-mailed the parent corporation Alltrista.com and just received the following response.
“It is true, we no longer market pickling lime. However, we have introduced a new item to our product line called Pickle Crisp. Pickle Crisp is added directly to each jar of pickles and eliminate the mess of soaking and rinsing. If you would like a $.75 off coupon to try Pickle Crisp, please reply to this message with your complete home mailing address.
Pickle Crisp appears to replace the pickling lime soaking process eliminating the need for pickling lime.
Pickling Lime still appears on the Mrs. Wages site but its referred to as the “old fashion way. None of the pickling recipes listed on the site use pickling lime.
The end may be near for grocery store kalkwasser supplies.
