View Full Version : Disaster pending? (Is my tank about to fall apart?)

I've had my 75G Pefecto with HOB overflow for 14 months. The guy I bought it from had it 2 yrs. The guy HE bought it from had it I think 2-3 years.

I am noticing an inordinate amount of saltcreep buildup along one half of the back, at the bottom. Also, there are droplets of water sort of permanently stationed (when I dry them they reappear but don't drip) at the top back corner of one side. When I run my finger along the bottom side corners (where the plastic frame ends) my finger returns with moisture, and there is saltcreep.

Is my tank about to spring a leak or fall apart??? Is there anything I can do short of buying a new tank?

Mayhaps it's gathering moisture from the air, ala humidity?

I would imagine that is the reason the the first guy sold the tank.. Sounds like you have a very slow leak to me. If I were you I would seriously consider replacing the tank before you have a real problem. After all the investment you make to your reef, a new tank is a "drop in the bucket"

You know it happen at the most in-opportune time. Murphy's law... JMO

He sold because he was sent to the Gulf. First guy sold because he moved to Guam. But I hear ya.

HEY NOW YOU CAN UPGRADE TO A 90 GALLON AND IT SHOULD STILL FIT YOUR STAND.

I know on very humid days salt creep will pull moisture from the air and make it look like its leaking. The last few days have been humid.

Personally I'd Wait til we get some dry days and check before you do anything drastic.

If you are sure the salt creep is from water leaking out of the tank and not slpashed or evaporated, I would replace the tank ASAP!!

You may be getting advanced notice of tank failiure.

I had two seperate tank leaks. Both tanks were less than 6 months old and gave no notice. Both leaks were due to a seam on the bottom of the tank. The first one I caught after 35 of 70 gallons leaked. The second one, I lost everything except a 26" zebra moray.

REPLACE THAT TANK BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE!!

Yikes, Joel. Hope you're not looking at tank failure. Of course... this does "justify" an upgrade. What's your dream tank? Make it happen!

No room for a "dream" tank. Well, in fact, this WAS the dream tank (funny how dreams change).

I am gonna continue to monitor closely, following Greg Maddux's advice, and also keep my eyes open for a 90G RR or a 110G RR (which will also fit the stand).

Thanks!

That's exactly what I was going to tell you. Upgrade to a larger tank, w/ same footprint

Soon as someone donates that 90 or 110 to me :)

Yes! Greg is right! hehhe..

Salt looooves moisture. So I second him on holding off for the time being.. Maybe pickup an 'emergency' setup, like a big plastic tub, ya know? Come up with a contingency plan while you've got the time to.

I think misery should buy me a 90G RR. Everyone vote: yes or no.

I sure will!

Right after you bring over that foot-wide blue tort colony that you said you'd give me ;)

I think Dave should cut the 125 down to a 90 for me.

OK, but the way that you need it cut, it's gonna leak worse than the other one :D
