View Full Version : Clear toppers for aquariums? What do you cover your aquarium with?

I have a 55 gallon aquarium, and the cover on it is the stock cover that comes with all oceanic displays. It is half glass and half acrylic and really seems to block out alot of the light coming from my PC's.

I have to have a top because I have a couple of known jumpers in my tank, but I'm wondering what kind of alternatives I have.

What do you cover your tank with?

Lighting Egg crate.

Home depot has it, just cut it to size and slap it on. You really need to get the glass cover off the tank.

Do most folks use a top of some sort, or only if you have jumpers?

Whoops, I meant to post that my tank has one of those nice over the top PC sets with the 4 65w's, so whatever it is that covers the tank, has to be visually pleasing as it's going to be visible to anyone who walks in the room.

I don't think so, but I have seen silver shiney egg crate on lights in buildings, but i don't know if home depot has that one and what the affects of saltwater would have on it.

Go buy a can of plastic prep for painting. Usually in the automotive painting section of specialty stores, spray onto the crate, then paint the plastic whatever color you want, should be fine! Just what I'm thinking.

Actually here is what I use for plastic prepping:
SEM part # 38353
Plastic/Leather Prep

Give it a try.

I know you can get black egg crate for theatrical lighting purposes. I would guess it's the same type of stuff. Probably a lot more expensive if you have to go through an actual lighting company though.
