Does anyone know what the recomended amount of hours are for lights to be on? I have 55W pc in my 20 L. right now they are in a 12 hour cycle. but I dont want to over do it. I'm figuring that since it's a low power fixture they would need that many hours of light.

hey alex,
i have 2 55w lights i was thinking about gettin rid of, are you interested? i know you mention that you wanted to upgrade the lights when i was over. you could borrow them and see how it works and if you like them, you could have them both for $50. let me know what you think alex.

Hi there,
I have 2 96W PC 50/50 and I have them on for 10 hours. I start one of them at 12PM and the second one an hour later. The last PC turns off at 10PM. I did that because, I was really having a bad hair algae problem. My clean up crew and my Drawf Angel could not keep up until I reduce the lighting period. I'm hair algae free now. I know you don't have a hair algae problem, but I still continue to keep the lights on for 10 hour. My softies seem to be fine with the shorten light period. I hope this helps.

Ok, so if i'm not having any visible hair algae I could continue to have themn on for 12hours? is algae the only side effect of having the lights on too long??

Jason,
are the 2 55w lights, in one fixture? If they are I would definitelly be interested...what kind are they? fixture?

hey alex,
no they arent in one fixture, you would have to retrofit them somehow. they are two ballasts with a connection for the lights on each one. one is a workhorse ballast and the other is a coral life ballast.

Id say your fine with 12hrs. Ive been running my tank on 12 hrs for years. Sometimes I run them for up to 14 hrs. Generally algae problems are linked to water quality issues. Combining water quality issues with extended photoperiods creates a huge algae problem.
