just purchased 1 week ago. was wondering what is the proper technique for placement. have it planted in the sandbed but it seems as though the bottom is starting to rot.

Sediment will clog and kill sponges. So will any air exposure. Most sponges need to be in the shadow with significant water flow.
You could try to cut the rotting area off with a very sharp razor blade. Most of the bigger size sponges do not survive in aquaria (hard to keep up with their feeding requirements)

good current ( not too strong) and low light level. My tree sponge is located at button of the tank. As I know sponge love to have higher dissolve organic level. My spong is one year old still health but not grow any bigger.
