i'm considering trimming my colt coral and see if i get the clippings to grow. where is the best place to cut and the best tool to use? any other info i need to know to do this?

I'd use the method where a rubber band cuts through the tssue slowly, or you give a periodic twist to a loop of fishing line. These corals have large solenia and may collapse, never to recover, if cut outright. The "pinching off" methods seem to eliminate or reduce this possibility and also emulate the natual branchlet dropping behavior of some of these species.
