Hello Dr. Ron :)

A friend and fellow RCer has some pictures of what looks to be a shrimp of some kind. I asked if he minded my posting his pictures here for a possible ID. I am very curious as to what it might be.

The shrimp was found hanging out with a few acro crabs in one colony. Any idea is welcome.

Thank you in advance and I am looking forward to meeting you (again, doubt you remember me) at MACNA.

Hi,

Odd looking little fella. It is possibly a species of Microprosthema, however it doesn't closely match the ones in my references (they have short spines on the body and this guy is smooth). The other option is that it is one of many small species of snapping shrimps.

I think it is probably a harmless commensal.

I won't be at MACNA.

Cool shrimp! Wish I could get one for my tank! I wonder if that shrimp makes snapping sounds with its claws like a pistol would.

It did make a snapping sound. It's in my 55g reef, and who knows if I'll ever see it again.

Amy,

You wouldn't still have the little guy would you?

Amy posted this for me. You see, I'd already asked Ron about two critters in 7 days time, and felt my allowance was used up. :D

It's in my reef tank. Odds are I'll never see the guy again, unless it grows larger so I can enjoy it.
