I took a penguin powerhead out of my tank about three weeks ago that was encrusted with coralline algea. I just put it in a plastic bag and left it there. Now I have a use for it again and I'm wondering if it's alright to put it back in the tank "as is". Will it cause a serious ammonia spike or somehting worse?

You can probably dissolve most of it with vinegar or muriatic acid, but I agree that it won't likely cause an ammonia spike or other problems.

Exactally what Randy said. I just put an old powerehead in my 2 1/2 G of vinigar I use for cleaning all of my powerheads, but this time I left it in over night. I washed it off in FW and it looked so good. It all disolved away. The coraline, the feather dusters and dreded vermetid snails. I usally leave it in for 10 minutes and scrape like crazy, but now I recomend leaving it in for overnight unless Randy says its bad? Could it disolve too much? Thanks.

No, that exposure should be fine. :)

I have a utilty sink in my basement so last night I dissassembled the powerhead and put it hot water and white vinager and left it there. Hopefully when i get home tonight the junk should come off with a min. effort. Thanks all

The more vinegar and less water, the faster it will go. :)
