I am reappling silicone on all the interior seals of an old 20 gal. tank. I plan to remove as much of the current silicone (which is already coming off in some spots). The tank doesn't leak. Can I use DAP 100% Silicone Rubber Clear Sealant for Windows, Doors, Trim, Siding & Molding sold at Lowes? The only Aquarium silicone that is sold is 2.8 oz, and I will need a lot of tubes. Does anybody know if this would be safe for a marine aquarium?

I get my silicone from loews / home depot. The stuff says aquarium sealant on it and it is the same stuff they sell at the LFS for about 3x as much. There was a guy at Loews who works at some other LFS telling me they didn't have any aquarium sealant and to go buy some at his store.... bastard I shuld have gotten him fired :mad2: . Anyways the stuff is about $2.50 the size of a normal toothpaste tube and is usually with the caulk in the paint aisle. Used it for years for various DIY endeavours with no problems.

I know that G.E. silicone I for doors and windows is good for aquarium use. It is a full size tube of caulking. The Dap could be o.k., i just dont know that it is. Usually it will be listed in the small print if it is aquarium safe or not. HTH

I have used DAP and GE. I am pretty sure that it is the DAP that says "safe for food contact" or something similar.. Thats the one I prefer to use.

If it says 100% silicon it is safe to use. I resealed my overflows with sealant from Lowes and all is well.

Make sure it doesn't have any mildew or bacteria inhibitors in it. Some tubes that say "100% silicone" in one spot list mildew inhibitors in other spots on the label.
