Could come one shed some light on this subject?
On the reefermadness acclimation page it recomends to perform ans iodine dip on SPS colonies, however I have seen some post that recommend NOT to do this?
What are the pros and cons of dipping a new SPS from a vendor (RM) and should this action be performed?
thanks

To each his own. After seeing what red bugs did to my corals, I will never NOT dip a new piece again. I have never lost a coral(sps)because of a dip(administered correctly). Then again, I haven't bought a wild colony in 3 years.

Iodine dips are used to reduce bacterial levels. I did a dip just one time, w/ an Acro valida that had developed some necrosis where the monofilament ID tag rubbed at the tissue. I don’t like that tagging method that those Bali Aquaculture folks use. Anyhow, I dipped it and applied a super-glue bandage over the necrotic area. The necrosis stopped spreading and the colony is now doing fine.

I dip as a precaution, even 'aquacultured' pieces and frags from friends tanks. When done correctly, can't see the harm. If not done at all though, I sure as heck can. ;)

I guess it is safe to say that a new aquired wild colony should be dipped?

Follow the package instructions on the iodine. I've seen really nice pieces killed by too strong a solution.

As long as we're on the subject. Will Lugol rid of hitch hikers such as the red flat worms?
Where can you purchase the lugols?

I will also throw in an airstone or small powerhead to keep the solution moving. Bath time averages 15 minutes.

As long as we're on the subject. Will Lugol rid of hitch hikers such as the red flat worms? I have seen it kill brown flat worms and mixed results on green/red FW's at the 40 drops per gallon.
