Sounds like what I had when I had a silca problem.. I think they are called dinoflagelates (spelling?)

If you send me your address and want to spend $15 I can get you silica levels checked... can take up to two wks though

Once I started using RO water, it cleared up within a few wks

Well, Not that I have a problem spending $15 but I should probably just go ahead and get an RO unit. I have a fair amount of sand from the well in my whole house filter and that's probably where the silicates are coming from.

Thanks for the info.

Mike, What I don't understand is why you wouldn't have had this long ago. This brown powder is usually diatoms, and it is one of the first things you get when you setup a tank. Have you had it all along, or is it new?

Cabin,

This may answer you question.

It's new but may be a result of this treatment.

I think your problem is way harder than will get resolved with just club people looking at it. Why not post it on one of the larger forums at reef central? They seem to be pretty active--get some experts on the case.
