I'm thinking of using a 32G Rubbermaid garbage can as a top off reservoir. I was just thinking, is there a need to measure the pickling lime when I mix it in the container? Could I just dump the entire container in the can, wait for it to settle out, and then use it till the sediment has completely dissolved? Could be about a month at my current rate of evaporation before I need to add RO/DI, even longer before I have to add Lime.

Yes, you can add excess, although I wouldn't put in a huge amount. It may become hard to mix, and will slowly become more and more CaCO3 and Mg(OH)2.

I'd plan to clean it out once a year or so.
