View Full Version : how fast to adjust Ca, Alk

I'm running a very small system, 30 gal, and adjusting Ca and Alk via kalkwasser.

My alk is staying put aroung 1.8 meq, Ca++ around 330 ppm, so I'm pretty much in "Zone 2"

As I adjust Ca to 450ppm and Alk to 4 meq, is there any kind of guideline as to how fast I can make this adjustment?

Thanks for any help,

I presume that you are making the calcium increase with calcium chloride, not the limewater?

Using clacium chloride, you can boost calcium as fast as you want. All at once is OK, but split into 2 additions with a measurement in between can help you home in on the exact target that you want.

This calculator will tell you how much is needed:

Then I presume you'll use baking soda to boost the alkalinity (all at once, a day later than the calcium, with it dissolved in fresh water) or with limewater (added slowly over time)

I had planned on using kalkwasser to make both additions, but using that calculator it's clear you way is better, THANKS!

Yes, you'd never be able to raise the calcium that much with the kalkwasser as the alkalinity would get way too high.

Good luck!
