Just wondering what people with large tanks do for heating. I cant find a heater that will handle a 500+ system. Or do you guys use multiples? of how many watts? brands? Thanks all

If this is going to be a reef tank, they ususally come with lots of strong lighting. That provides more heat than you'll know what to do with. It also depends on climate. I see you are in San Diego, so you should hardly ever see a heater come on, if ever.

what about at night or if the lights fail to come on for some crazy reason? I would throw in a few [3] 250w heaters in the sump.

yeah, I run 3 250w heaters too, that heats 520 gallon.

Depending on the size, look for commercial immersion heaters. Available in stainless and titanium, up to 17.5Kw.

I would recommed several smaller units in various locations (If multi tank setup).

More important is an accurate controller.

I have two titanium 1000 watt heaters with a controller on a 450 tank and about 100 gal or so sump and seperate fuge. I don't want any temperature swings in the cold winter months here in N.Y.

I just opted for a Heat Pump -- it's a large chiller [1 1/2 HP] that can reverse process and heat the system as well. It uses a large titanium coil heat exchanger for both processes, just like a smaller chiller would in the PVC canister that normally cools.

I have 3 - 250 watts in my sump....Keeps the tank fine over night and they don't run at all during the day.....Tanks a 220 but my total volume is probably closer to 300
