View Full Version : Painting on top of varnish?

The nice, "natural" stain that I so lovingly applied to one of my stands six months ago has become more and more yellow. I actually hate the stain now...it has shifted in color quite a lot.

I want to paint this stand, but I'm a bit unclear as to whether or not I need to remove the varnish first. Would a light sanding do, or should I strip the stand down to bare wood?

You should be able to paint right over it, sir. I have done it several times. If it is a high gloss finish, then hitting it with some sandpaper will ensure a better bond. Otherwise, clean it and paint away. I'll bet you end up with a nicer painted finish than you have ever seen. :)
