I have been growing calurpa in my sump. the main problem was the parts of the calurpa that were getting into the return pumps along with other sludge.

my solution-

I used a large Rubbermaid container with a 15 high placed in side it. my drain from the main tank goes directly into the 15h and the water just spills over the top of it and into the rubber maid sump. i keep the returns in the Rubbermaid. because the water level is all the way over the top of the glass I had to hang the LOA fixture above the new refugium with two untangled cloths hangers.

now the calurpa can grow higher and hopefully keep excess nutrients to a min.

cheap and effective so far.

the calupera has quadrupled in amount since I set this thing up as a temporary experiment six weeks ago. coraline is already growing on the walls as well. pods are flourishing. IMO with a fugium, a water column of only 4-6" is best. only drawback is the volume of water is not as great, therefore not as stabilizing to the whole setup. HTH you poor fellas. Cheers, pathos

I just had a vision that I had to see inside.:D So I bought a 20L. I have since cut off the return tube and stuck it in a vase so the water would flow over it and break the surface. Just ordered a detrivore kit from IA
