Urchin stabbed my teardrop

Can't get the spine out because the clam closes up every time I get near him. The diadema spine is probably 1/2" deep stuck into the clam. What happens if I leave it in there?

I wonder if I can put a little piece of wood between the shell to hold him open while I pull it out. Anybody ever do anything like this?
