hi all,

read from one of the Reefkeeping articles dat it is advisable to maintain SG at 1.0264.... is dat true? Has always believed that the ideal level is at 1.022.....

Need expert advise on this, can anyone help?

No expert here but this is what I know. 1.026 is the salinity of natural salt water. Opinions vary but people recommend keeping it from 1.025 - 1.026 for keeping corals. I am not 100% sure but 1.022 is what some people keep salt water fish because it is assumed it is a little less stressful for them at that level. Although I don't know why you would deviate from the parameters found in nature.

Stability seems to be more important than any EXACT 5 decimal place number. The generally accepted best range for coral's is 1.024-1.026. If your tank is stable, everyone is happy and the SG stays at 1.022-1.023, I would think thats fine. The danger with that is if something happened where the SG lowered a point or two, you would be at 1.020, which is definately too low for corals. We all make mistakes every now and then that make our SG fluctuate so the closer you keep it to ideal the less dangers a small drop would be.
