My buddy is taking me abolone diving this weekend and was wondering if anyone knows of a good place to rent a cold water wetsuit for the weekend in the Sacramento area. Thanks!

Try to get a one piece 7mm. The two piece suits are bulky and you'll need almost twice the lead on your weightbelt. Talk to Patrick at Dolphin Scuba on W. El Camino in Sac, he's a club member and fellow diver. Don't forget to have your fishing license and ab punch card with you when your diving. Game wardens police the ab divers pretty heavily. They sit on the cliffs with scopes looking for poachers, so don't pick more than 3, they have to be at least 7" across the widest point of the shell, and don't remove them from the shell untill you get home (all these rules are in the Salt water game regs booklet). Once you get 'em home, pop them out of the shell, cut out the gut, and trim away all the black meat and hard part of the foot to reveal your delicious steak. Beat the hell out of the steak with a meat tenderizer (in a heavy ziplock works great), but don't beat it so hard that you split the foot. This helps the muscle relax and makes it soft. Slice the steak vertically into 1/4" strips and marinate in your favorite sauce for a bit (something light like lemon or orange juice, or my personal fave, Basque Fish Sauce). Sear the strips on a really hot skillet for NO longer than 30 seconds each side (abs cook REALLY fast) until they just break with a slight pressure from a fork. ENJOY YOUR TASTY GASTROPOD! Try not to freeze it, and enjoy it fresh (within a week in the fridge). Frozen abs just don't taste as good. Oh yeah, look out for the Great Whites too! Actually the Sea Lions are worse than sharks. They'll beat you up and steal your abs if you let them. HAVE FUN!

Thanks for the info Rich! The Great White threat was in the back of my mind, but didn't know that the sea lions were that bold. I've had them steal salmon from me before, but never heard of them stealing abalone out of your hand!

Sadly my abalone trip has been postponed for a couple of weeks. My wife was rear ended yesterday. Found out that it costs more to fix the car than its worth so now we have to go car shopping this weekend[rolleyes].
