Hi folks,

I recently got a few tanks with holes drilled in them. I've never deal with this before and I fully admit that the mechanics of the hobby are not my strong suit.

So I've been to home depot several times and I keep getting the wrong things. I've asked them for help and they sold me things that dont even fit through the holes. So I looked on Marine Depots pages and found "bulkheads". I'm so glad I know what they are called now. LOL But now I have no idea which type to use.

They list these three types: Standard Threaded Bulkhead Fitting, Double Threaded Bulkhead Fitting, Double Slip Bulkhead Fitting --- which are on this page

http://www.marinedepot.com/aquarium_plumbing_parts_fittings_2.asp?ast=

But there is not alot of infor about them. What is the difference? Which should I use?

The holes are 1 1/2" big and I want to make pvc connections on the inside of the tank so the holes become overflows with simple pvc pipe running vertically up to the water surface. Some of the holes are on the bottom of the tank.

Also, if i get something that looks like those things at home depot --- do I need to seal it with something or use "O-rings" or something? Or do u just connect the bulkhead and it is watertight?

Any and all help is appreciated.

I would get the double slip, this means you will have to glue your plumbing on both sides of the bulkhead. Once it is glued it is there for good and will not leak. Be sure you get bulkheads for the size hole you have. There is a gasket included with the bulkhead that should go on the water side of the tank.

If you go with the double slip then you want ft1153 http://www.marinedepot.com/md_viewItem.asp?idproduct=FT1153 which is 3/4" pipe and will fit in a 1.5" hole.

You can also purchase http://www.marinedepot.com/md_viewItem.asp?idproduct=FT8344 which is a 3/4" slip strainer to prevent fish and other things from going down the drain.

Also check out aquatic eco systems. www.aquaticeco.com because they have the best selection and are one stop shopping.
