Hi everyone!

In support of the local business of our good friend and hoping to coincide with the ORA pool order, let's see if we can get enough orders to qualify for free shipping at $75. If it seems good for everyone, let's meet again at the O St aquarium at the same time the ORA order comes.

a) Chang $11.80
b) . . .
c) . . .

Thanks to all again!

Thanks guys!

We're almost there, we just need one or two more orders. :)

Marc, how are you doing? Hope everything is ok with you, saw your post on BARE. Just wondering, is it possible to get more selection on your website? Thanks!

How soon do you need the order in? I'm interested in a couple items.

Thanks!

As far as I know, no one is in a hurry. :)

Regarding the other questions, I guess we could order once we pass the $75 mark and we'll set up a meeting time that is convenient for everyone. Is O St Aquarium still a convenient place for everyone?

Thank all of you for your interest!

HI!

Well, I've been busy buying stuff and setting up my tank for my new seahorses, but I think I'll need some snails and a few shrimpies.

When will we need to place the order and what are the details on pickup?

Izsabelle

Oh, by the way, I don't mind hosting the order. I'm home everyday unless there's a dr's appt for that day.

And O street is a good place to meet.

Chang-

Business wise were doing better than we had expected at this point, and it's due in part to the great local support we've received...so thanks to everyone.

We recently added an expanded Live Rock selection. I will be adding more livestock items in the near future. I know that sounds like a broken record, but I've been trying to work and nurse a back injury at the same time...and jusy have not been able to sit the long hours that it takes to add additional livestock. Also, we took 50 holding tanks out of commision in order to add an additional 100. We should have the 50 back into commision very soon, along with the additional 100.

Until then, if there is anything special that you're looking for, please don't hesitate to ask.

8 cerith snails $ 6.4

Wow! Thanks to everyone for their response!

Good to hear from you again, Marc! Yes, we're all looking forward to the expanded selection.

Liz, I actually had the same exact thought because I'll be busy in the bay area these few days and it will be a GREAT help if you could host the pool order again. You did a great job last time, I'm sure everyone will be happy for you to host this order. :)

OK folks, Liz (Izsabelle) will be the coordinator again this time.

Thanks!

bzzbee2-

I'm personally not a big fan of wild caught clowns. The tank raised are much healthier and do so much better in the long run. We do see the tank raised every now and then...but one of the problems with the gold stripe is that it doesn't have the gold stripe until about a year old. This makes it an expensive fish (compared to other clowns) to tank raise, so I don't think a lot of places are breeding them in the numbers they are other fish. Same with the true perculas, they take a year to reach marketable size, and unlike most clowns which lose stripes as they mature, the perculas grow into their 3 stripes. So a 6 month percula is to small to sale and may only have 1 or 2 stripes, or a variation.

I would look to pick up tank raised gold stripes from two sources, this way you assure that they are not directly related. I know that John Hardman at www.clownfishdirect.com has tank raised gold stripes offered at $16.99, but they are still too young to have the gold stripes yet.

Marc

bzzbee2
04/13/2004, 10:27 AM
Yea. thats cool. I will check them out. I agree with you on the tank raised. they are much easier to keep. My most recent addition is a RBTA. Tank raised. dang thing looks awesome and is doing great.

POOL ORDER INFO:

Two things you need, first is the pool number and second is the discount code.
For all orders placed that will be shipped as part of this pool, please tell them to put "pool14675" in the comments field during checkout.

To get the 5% off, they need to enter "5off" in the Discount Coupon field of the checkout.

They will still be charged shipping individually if the orders are under $75. But, we will look at the order collectively, and will not charge their credit cards for the shipping amounts. Example: If we have a charge for $65 + shipping, we will only settle it for $65 not the full total. This is the only way that we can credit back the shipping at this time..

Cutoff Date: Monday, April 19 (no orders will be accepted Tuesday the 20th, so they have until Monday at Midnight)

Ship Date: Wednesday, April 21 for delivery Thursday, April 22 (I'll be out of town the 21st & 22nd in case there are any last minute issues)

POOL ORDER # --- pool14675
DISCOUNT CODE--5off

Marc,

If I order bangaii cardinals is it possible to ask for a male and female pair?

Marc Daniels
04/13/2004, 02:35 PM
Liz-

There are not any clear cut ways to sex the Bangaii's. There are supposed guidelines...look at the jaw, or the top fin, etc. But none are guaranteed to determine the sex. The only sure fire way I know is to buy an existing proven pair, or buy a group and then see which ones pair off.

04/15/2004, 03:03 AM
Cool.. I was thinking about adding a clown. How young are your maroon gold stripes? Im looking to get the smaller ones. do you think i woiuld have a problem putting in more than one.. i would suspect that eventually the more dominat one would stress the hell outa the other one. but i have been doing some reading that said if theres 3 or 4. then the stress is spread over the remaining fish, and it has less ill effects on the fish.. though im not sure if this is true.

Marc Daniels
04/15/2004, 09:47 AM
The GS Maroons don't get the gold in their strips until about a year old...so they're at least that old, and they are small. The problem with doing the 3 or 4 fish route is what do you do wih the extra fish once the female/male mature and get big. I've successfully paired Maroons by going the intimidation route...basically you get two clowns that are so different in size that the smaller one won't even consider resisting and immediately submits to the MUCH larger fishes advances.

Marc

bzzbee2
04/15/2004, 10:35 AM
Yea, i was reading on that.. if it came to the point when i had the couple paired off, i probably always find a local friend that would want the others, or if necessary trade in to lfs for credit. Im looking for another local place that has some small ones, so i could mix up the herd.

Marc Daniels
04/15/2004, 10:53 AM
Checkout www.clownfishdirect.com for tank raised GS Maroons. His are still too young to have the gold stripe, but it's a great price and the tank raised are much healthier in the long run t han wild caught.

Marc

bzzbee2
04/15/2004, 10:58 AM
Yea, i have checked them and am seriously looking into it. Do you have to worry about inbreeding with fish? the one big problem with buying on line is that i dont like getting nailed with shipping. i just might have to bite the bullet here. maybe there may be some fellow sacramento area reefers that would like to order with me..

I have several of the Bluespots still available. I have had several orders since placing them on-line, and all have shipped just fine except one. They are notorius jumpers and should only go into a tank that is covered with minimal open areas for them to go "carpet surfing".

Well, I placed my order in last night, more peppermints, nas snails and hermits.

My cerith snails have all gone to the greater reef in the ocean. I think I just didn't have enough algae for all the algae cleaners. But it seems my snails are all busy laying eggs. There are little white eggs all over my glass. I'm not sure which ones are doing it, but I did spot a few tiny baby snails in the tank the other day. They looked like the nerite snails.

Anyone else with baby snails??

brentp
04/19/2004, 03:13 PM
I have hundreds of little white eggs on the glass that have a yellow yolk sack. If they are snails it should save me some $$ on clean up crews in the future.

Just placed my order..

Ever since I switched my refugium light bulb, my macros are growing like weeds.. there's some chaeto macro that needs to be trimmed soon.. it works great for nitrate reduction/control, but unfortunately my tangs don't like it.. they'd rather munch on caluerpa instead..

I see people selling chaeto online and ebay nowadays.. however i don't believe in selling macro since most of them probably got theirs free in the first place!

so if anyone wants any FREE chaeto, let me know.. i can bring it on Thurs to O street (same time as the pool pick up).. just like King's tickets, first come first served and supply is limited.. next month, i should have some feather and razor caluerpa too..

i would be happy to accept any different macro donation from those in a generous mood.. i've been looking for red gracilaria for my tangs.. :D

huy

ps.. my tank also has some snail eggs and baby snails (cerith?).. i caught a cerith in the act of laying eggs last week.

huy-what light were you using and what light are you using now?

This exact spot light (http://archive.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=313318).. HD has it for $10 each or 2 for $14.. it's basically a 19w spiral pc inside a reflector.. at the same time i switched, i began lightly dosing iron as well.. so it could be the combination of both..

FYI.. i had a 20w spiral pc before that ran 24/7; hardly any growth.. now with the spot light, it only runs 12/7 (reverse the main lights).

Just so ya all know.. Local hardware stores are selling those compact flourscent bulbs like that for .99, i believe it is through a program with PG&E. They have been advertising it on the radio now for a couple weeks... and Big Lots has the reflectors for .99 so you can do a really cheap setup for fuge lights here in sacto...

My shrimp are ok, so are the hermits and snails.

I did notice the coral banded did not look good when I opened the package this morning. He was missing a claw and looked dead, but I wasn't sure if that was the case at the time.

The cleaner was in a similiar state as the coral banded. Both of these shrimp looked dead, but I was hoping they were just in shipping shock.

Hey, Chang,

Contact Marc. If my memory serves me right.. Your order didn't include the peppermint or the crab. It seems like there was a big mixup with Marcs' partner.

Also, another person was suppose to get an order of fish, but it wasn't included in this order at all.

By the way, if we ever do this again, and who ever handles the arrival needs to make sure Marc sends a list of what everyone ordered.

The list was missing from the order this time. I think having a list helps determine who is missing what and what was labeled incorrectly.

In the first group order, one member had ordered a brittle star, but the star was mislabeled. Since Marc sent a list of the orders, I just relabeled it to the proper owner.

Hahaha! ROTFL!!!

Alright then, let's set up a disaster donation for poor Chang, since we all have extras, pool together all your extra critters to replace the missing ones from my order. Yay!!! Just kidding. :)

Thanks again for your macro, Huy! Love it. :)

BTW, I just want to say, Marc's a great guy, very friendly, helpful and honest, so I'll continue to support this local business. His business is new, so there'll be a few bumps here and there, but we all wish him great successs!

OK, to make things easier and faster for everyone, please append your missing or DOA items to this list. Let's just have one list, so please copy, paste, and append this list when you post:

Hey Chang..I'll donate!

I have a emerald crab that has been evicted from the main tank.

He's cute as a button but has a few nasty habbits.

1: Will find bristle worms and tear them in half. Then scatter the remaining pieces into the water column.
2: If a fish is near him, he will poke or pinch it till it moves. Seahorses were not happy with this guy!
3: He will also throw things at nearby fish. I caught him tossing bits of shell and dead mysis shrimp at the seahorses.
4: He eats the macroalgae, but wont touch bubble algae.
5: He eats coraline algae too.
6: Likes to rip up button polyps.

But he's cute! And you can have him!

:D

Hey..maybe it's Marc's evil plan to keep us ordering...We miss one item or one item dies in this order... so he gives us a replacement on our next order.. but we, the compulsive shoppers must buy more then just one thing.. maybe that's the evil plan? :p :D :p

I also have a Koran Angelfish that i am looking to unload! He dosent touch any of the corals in my tank, but he is kinda a pig, and him and the cleaner shrimp have taken control of half my tank. its cool to watch the cleaner hang on to the koran and do his work.... i really dont even remember how many snails i orderd. so far they are all doing fine.

Ya know another thing we can do is have one person pay for everything, that way it's all on the same order and then if the person that pays, we can pay pal them ... I don't know, just an idea ... sounds a bit more simple. Thoughts?

user48953
04/25/2004, 12:48 AM
IMO, I like how the last couple of pool orders have been processed.. we each order individually and pay with our own CC/etc and specify the pool number.. then only the items are charged (no shipping).. the last mix up was a bump in the road of a new business and should be considered lessons learned.. but if you all want to change it, i'm fine with it too :)

i could use another emerald crab.. looks like the last one lost its battle with my fire shrimp :(

Marc.. Thank you!

When does everyone think we can try another pool order? the weather forecast for this week is hot, so keep that in mind..

also, would it be possible for whom ever gets the delivery to float the bags (with water) in their sump until the meet time? this should help stabilize the temperature a bit.

bzzbee2
04/27/2004, 02:54 PM
i also think that we should try to arrange the meeting time around the delivery time... if thats possible...

brettzki
04/28/2004, 01:36 AM
Lets place the order this Sunday, it's supposed to cool down into the 80's all next week. Sound like a plan? As for pickup, lets find out what date they'll arrive and we can all pick up at O Street Aquarium the day they arrive, I'm sure they won't mind us floating our bags for us, Dennis will be down with that. Let me know if that sounds ok and who's going to coordinate this ... probably should be the same person as last time? Thanks.

bzzbee2
04/28/2004, 01:54 AM
well Ostreet didnt seem to be to thrilled that we were doing all that out in front of their place. at least thats the impression that i got. after everyone had got their stuff i went inside and got the 20 questions routine. and before we can place a group order like the last one, we need to set things up with mark again so we have the groupl order number and such....

Marc Daniels
04/28/2004, 02:03 AM
All-

I would imagine that O Street wouldn't appreciate that they are being used as a meeting spot for people taking delivery of livestock from another source. I'm sure that, even as cool as Dennis is, they would never allow people to float bags from another source for safe keeping in their tanks until people could pick them up.

I frequent most of the local shops on a regular basis, and would like to avoid having any problems between myself and the folks at O Street. If it is at all possible, I would appreciate if you could find an alternative meeting location in the same area. Possibly the Starbucks 2 blocks away on Alhambra.

If it comes down to it, and you need somewhere to store the goddies until meeting time, I have a 150 gallon frag system with plenty of room to float bags in. I could them meet everyone at the predetermined location and time.

3) Marc, if you don't mind floating the bags in your frag tank, when is a good day for you to receive the order? It looks like next Wednesday is forcasted with a high of 73F. If we pick next Wed, when should the cut off date for the new order be?

What do you guys think if we pick up our orders at Marc's house? Perhaps we could set up a 1 or 2 hour window of time for pick ups? Is this ok with you and your family, Marc?

There are quite a few advantages to picking up our orders at Marc's house, eg bag floating, verification of DOA/missing items, longer window for pick up, etc etc. But he lives in Elk Grove, perhaps one person can volunteer to pick up all the north area orders while the rest of us in the south will pick up at Marc's house.

OK, hope I didn't miss anything.

Thanks everyone.

Picked my order up at Changs house about 8:30. Was a little surprised that they ship damp instead of in water. Since they weren't in water, I couldn't really figure out how to acclimate them so I just put them in the tank. They all seem to be alive and most of them are already moving around the tank. One of the species, I think its the nerites, have their shells covered pretty well in pink corraline algae - looks really cool.

Marc Daniels
05/06/2004, 12:12 AM
Ryan-

Sorry, I forgot to give everyone acclimation instruction. Dry shipping is actually much healthier for the snails & hermits. ALl you needto do is float them for 15-20 minutes, and then releasedirectly into the tank.

Brett-
We often combine items in a bag to save shipping room on these large orders. Are you sure they were not mixed with something else, they are pretty small and may have looked like snails?

Marc

Sardaukar
05/06/2004, 12:28 AM
Ya I thought about floating them but in the back of my mind I was thinking "what if all the water leaked out of the bag and they are supposed to to be submerged?". They had been floating in changs tank for a couple of hours so I just stuck them in. Looks like one of the snails isnt going to make it. 4 of long, cone shaped ones instantly buried themselves in the sand while the 5th one is still sitting motionless on the sand. Other than that everything looks healthy.

Oh and Chang gave me a couple of peices of Pulsing Xenia as my first coral. They are already pulsing in the bag as I drip acclimate them so I think thats a good sign :)
