Hi everyone, I have been watching the boards for a long time and have finally set up my first tank. It is an Oceanic 75 gallon, with a wet dry system . Glass tops 90 lbs of live sand and 70 lbs of live rock to start with. I have power compacts mounted with legs on top so that they sit 2 inches above the tank lids. My problem is I can't seem to get the temperature below 83 degrees farenheit. I live in Florida and have the AC in the house set to 75 F. I didn't want to have to get a chiller to get my temp down but willl if I have to . My plan is to eventually do some soft corals and mushrooms, and anemones (and reef fish). If anyone has any suggestions they would be greatly appreciated.

nothing wrong with 83* but removing the glass top will help get the temp down by allowing more evaporation as well as heat exchange with the air.

Do you have enough ventilation? Such as a flow thru fan for lights? I have 2 input fans and 2 output fans in my hood. Overkill but worth if for me in AC cost during summer. Some people also fan the sump for evaporative cooling if you have one. But you will need alot more top off water.

It wouldn't hurt to add a couple fans either.

Now that's a topic of a *lot* of debate. I target 82 F for my tanks. Dr Shimek's web site (www.rshimek.com) has a number of links to articles on the subject.

the norm varies between 78-84 with 80-82 being optimal, from what I have seen.

I greatly appreciate all of the replys. The information is invaluable. I just wanted to make sure I didn't murder any inocent reef dwellers.

if possible place a big fan over the wet dry and purchase a temp controller like on www.diyreef.com to help stabilize the temp. you will be losing more water due to evaporation, but it will help keep the temps down. also how many powerheads/pumps are you using?

I am using 2 powerheads and 1 return pump

Well thank you for all of the onfo and suggestions. I have gotten the tank down to 79F by attatching a clip on fan to the wet dry and pointing it at the water. Once again thanks for all of the help.
