Eheim canaster filter fort a sump?

I read a while ago about someone taking all the filter media out of the canaster fiter and just let water flow thru. Has anyone done this before? What are the Pro's and Con's? If i should do this, do take everything out or just the media/foam pads?

Take everything out. You might be able to put LR in the filter. Just an Idea

The Pro's are that you get extra water volume.

I posted this in two forums. Another person had to say this:

I have an Eheim 2217 and tried this a month or so ago. I noticed that the tank-mates were not as happy and when I tested the water after a couple weeks, the nitrates were way high. They had always been zero when I used the filter.

I added the innerds back and things improved tremendously.

Hmm, so he was running the Filter with LR instead of innards or with nothing at all?

I think nothing at all. I dont see why the Nitrates would go up. Do you?
