I am having my 55g RR tank custom made. I can have the tank drilled wherever I like and would like to know the best placement of the overflow and return holes and the recommended sizes of each.

Most I have seen place the overflow box in one corner with both the drain to the sump and the return within the overflow box. Is it better to drill the return on the opposite side of the tank. If my return pump is on the opposite side of my sump to the drain then I would need to plumb back to the return if both holes are on the same side. Will this decrease the return flow and is this relevant?

Recommendations appreciated

I think the standard setup is fine. Putting the return on the opposite side will work well, too. Whichever is more convenient for your setup is best. Since it's a 55g, your return lines, etc., are all pretty short.
