I ran across a thread about grounding rods. I've never even heard anything about grounding rods. I did a little looking and I know that they are used to remove stray electrical currents from the water. From what I understand stray electrical currents can cause fish disease or death. This may be a very important issue for me since I have a heater, two maxi-jet 1200 power heads, a Mag 12, and Mag 7 pump all submerged.

Are grounding rods important? Do you need a certain kind or amount per gallon? Do I need one for my sump and one for my display tank or just one for all?

Yes they're fairly important, the problem arises from the fact you have salt water (fairly decent conductor of electricity, not as good as copper but enough to cause problems) and you have spinning magnets inside those powerheads which makes the stray current appear
