I have a flame angel (which may be giong away soon), LM blenny, strawberry pseudochromis, B/G chromis and a pair of WS maroons, all have been in there for 3 to 4 months and doing very well with the exception of the flame, he has turned mean and harrasses everybody in the tank.

1 serpant star
I used to have a diamond spot Goby but he jumped out.

Only LR, hermits, emerals and sally lightfoot crabs, cleaner shrimp, mushrooms and a golden hammer for now.

Fish that I am researching are: some type of clown, royal gramma, six line wrasse, coral beauty, yellow tang....

mandktod
03/17/2004, 02:57 PM
Don't say yellow tang too loud, the tang police will get you, I researched tangs and really would like to have had one but they get too big for a 55 and then you have to get rid of them and that is if they don't get too stressed and get ich so I steared away from them.

roberts722
03/17/2004, 03:00 PM
I koow about the tang police. As mentioned nothing bout yet still researching. I agree that a 55 is at the very low limit for a yellow but I have seen many successfull 55's with perfectly healthy and long lived yellows.

By the way this would be the only Tang speices I would even consider in this size tank.

mandktod
03/17/2004, 03:08 PM
Yeah I would have loved to have one like I said but then I also found out that they are can get ich real easy and that pretty much stopped my thinking about it, so far I ahve not had any ich and I don't want any so I really don't want a fish that can get it real easy, I hope your works out for you i will just have to dream about mine. LOL

roberts722
03/17/2004, 03:11 PM
I notice that you have a Flame. I too had one once and they are also very prone to ich. Mine actually came down with it and took 2 clowns with him. Beautiful fish thought sorry to hear you are having troubles.

mandktod
03/17/2004, 03:14 PM
I think he may be going back soon, I am going to try to catch him and QT him for a few days and see if he calms down if not he is going to have to go back.

Can you put a niger trigger in with clowns, chromis, etc.?

I thought they were too aggressive.

Also: in a 55?

What could be a good show fish for the tank at 55 gallon? I think that is where I am having the problem!

I am getting some good ideas but need the final act :)

Here they say at least 50 gallons for a yellow tang.....

http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/prod_Display.cfm?siteid=21&pCatId=392

Is this still the standard yellow tang everyone harps on to be in at least a 75 gallon?

Im also trying to come up with ideas to stock my new 55g.
This is what I think I might do

4 green chromis
1 coral beauty
1 maroon clown
1 royal gamma or bicolor dottyback
1 blenny not sure which one
plus several inverts and soft craols like shrooms and zoos

I got my 55 coming. I have 5 fish in my 29 gallon right now, so I will list them first, then what I am going to get as extra.

2 Tank Raised True Ocellaris Clowns (baby)
1 Brazilian Royal Gramma
1 Neon Blue Yellow Belly Damsel
1 Blue Tang (baby) still only 2 inches.

coming about 2 months after 55 gallon move over
1 6 Line Wrasse
1 Banggai Cardinal
1 Mandarin after refugium setup and going well (4-6 Months down)

That should do it!

A Scott's Fairy Wrasse would be a good "show fish". A Coral Beauty Angel would be another good chose. I had a yellow tang inmy 55gal. Just resently moved him to my 75gal (knock on wooden stand--my 2 tangs have never had ich--sshhhhhh).

Well I think my royal gramms is on its last legs... Ich and I'm sure the stress of the QT tank has cause him to succomb to frayed fins, labored breathing, and poor swimming patterns...

Gonna give it a while though before I get anything else. I'll take corals over fish ANYDAY. Fish are a PITA!

But darn they're so pretty :rolleye1:

You might have a problem fitting it all but I'm sure you'll find a way. Its just tough to aquascape with a 55 because its not thick enough, you're pretty much limited to going up/down and left/right.

That's my 55 with ~90# of LR. Doesn't look too crowded. IMO, I think it needs a little more. The more LR you have, the more filtration/a healthier tank.

Here is what I have in my 55 gallon:

1 serpent starfish
1 sally lightfoot crab
1 emerald crab
1 decorator crab
a bunch of snails and hermit crabs
1 six line wrasse
1 goby - can't remember what type he is, duh
1 yellow damsel
1 black & white striped damsel
1 dottyback
star polyp rocks
pipe organ coral
waving hand xenia
red sea xenia - frag
sun polyps
candy cane coral - frag
3 small purple mushrooms
3 shaving brushes

I have a question, can you put more than one wrasse in a tank?

Baz

Shoestring Reefer
03/20/2004, 10:23 AM
A clown doesn't need to host. I'm not sure on the termonology, but their relationship with anemonies is compensitory (they help each other out) rather than symbiotic (they depend on each other).

Clowns will also host with inanimant objects. A search will turn up some examples.

well have the pair of clowns in qt. I bought some flake food for them will this be enough. I fed them a little and the gobbled it right up in about 5 mins. So 6 weeks and they should be in the main tank :) . Also lucked out at petsmart and bought a 200 gallon bucket of salt for $38. Gotta love the internet price match.

Not that I in any way call myself an expert, but I have a 55 gal and my yellow tang seems pretty darn peppy. (But he also only has three other tankmates...)

Yeah, I had a Coral Beauty Angel (one morning I woke up and she was dead... no sores, no trace of anything awry...water tests came up fine...even took a sample to the store... I believe it was the slow effects of cyanide capture or old age... had her for six months and she was big for her species...) I panicked thinking all my fish were next, but knock on wood everyone else seems healthy and hungrier than ever.

I am not sure I want to replace the angel though. I've got the tang who is growing, a maroon clown, arc eyed hawk, and a brazilian gramma who probably is at max size. Everyone seems pretty happy right now...

Someone asked about a Niger Trigger, this is my favorite fish, always has been, ever since going to the aquarium as a child. They get too big for a 55 though, and are not reef same.

Maybe you can look into blue throats, I am pretty sure tehy are smaller, and CAN be reef safe, though I still think they are too big.

This is the reason I need a 125 FOWLR one day......

come on, a cleaner shrimp cannot actually prevent an ich or parasite infestation, can it?? I know they continually pick over the dead skin and what not but I thought I read somewhere that buying a cleaner shrimp to prevent parasite infestation was a fable.

Shoestring Reefer
04/23/2004, 09:05 PM
I think the cleaners would only target the parasites during the part of their life cycle when they are being hosted. So, if you had a tank that was infested, and added a tang (or other succeptable fish) and a cleaner, the tang would get infected and then cleaned. Just my 0.02.

1 yellow tail damsel
1 4 stripe black and white damsel
1 percula
1 coral beauty

1 coral banded shrimp
1 cleaner shrimp
various snails crabs (hermit, sally lightfoot, emerald)
1 sea cucumber

Corals:
1 anchor
1 hammer (hosts perc)
1 blast
1 kenya tree
1 small bubble
vaious shrooms and polyps.

Filtration is a CPR Bak Pak and a 6 year old plenum.

I know it's reidiculously overstocked, but I've had this bio-load for over a year and everyone is quite happy. The plenum cranks.

I got a 1.5" yellow tang that was beaten up by the other tangs at the lfs. Poor guy has 1/3 of his sailfin torn off was skinny as heck and losing his color. Could see his organs pretty clear. Took him in for about $5. It's been about 5 days since. He's swimming around a lot eatting alot of shredded seaweed, nori, and kelp. Beefing him up and hes looking much better now. Getting his dark bright yellow back and you cant see his organs as much no more. Got about 1000 gph if not more of flow in the tank. He seems to like it.
