Hi,

I have three items I was hoping someone could identify for me.. I have pictures of two. The third you may be able to see in the pictures but getting a clear shot of them seem to be difficult.

The first item, I believe is your standard hair algae, can someone confirm?

The second item, I have no idea what it is .. it just appeared today and there are two of them .. is this just another form of algae? (see second post)

And the elusive third item .. my tank seems to be filled with some sort of pods or at least pod babies. They are all over the glass and are swarming through the tank. I'm a bit concerned that I have too much water flow as it seems they never settle down .. As I said earlier I'm not at this time able to get a good picture of one, but maybe someone with experience can pick one out of the two pics I've attached.

Thanks!!!

looks like the dreaded green hair algae. Check your phosphate levels. Are you using Ro water? As far as the pods, I could not see any but they are probably harmless.

Just took a measurement and Phosphate levels are low (I think) : 0.2 mg/L (possibly 0.3, but no higher)

You want them low. Do you use Ro water for top offs?

On the Algae ID .. are you saying both pics are of Hair Algae? They look drastically different (to my uneducated eye)

The second picture is a bit ambiguous, but part of it could be hair algae or a macroalgae. Either way, it's an issue of looks. If you don't like them, pull them out.

How long has the tank been running?

Ya how long has tank been running. If you dont like it siphon it out of sandbed. As on the coral, i really wouldnt worry about this unless it starts to take over your tank.

I agree the 2nd pic looks like some sort of macroalgae .. I've noticed a number of them growing across the sand bed.

The hair algae isn't out of control (yet) .. actually my trochus snails and fighting conch love it .. they always find their way over to the "forest" and mow it down. There is one section (in the pic) that is past some complex crevices so they are not as accessible.

Personally I have no problem with it .. I'm more interested in knowing .. well because this is my little tank and I love it!! :D

The tank has been running for about 3 weeks.

Sounds like the tank is doing well at this point. Good luck!

Do you know what the TDS of your DI water is?

Kevin
