I have a Excaliber SV2 Protein Skimmer (Advanced Aquaria). It is powered by a Rio 1700 pump. My problem is the collection cup fills with water and foam and overflows. There are no adjustments for air or pump flow rate. What can I do?

Dude...slow down with the posts...You've got 3 going for the same thing...

First..

Second,
I've never heard of this skimmer and the fact that it has no air or flow controls is concerning that it's a pretty cheap skimmer. Best guess is that they pump you have is overpowered for it. A quick Google search yielded very little information on it except that elmersaquarium.com carries it. Perhaps you could call them and see what kind of pump is suppose to be on it.

Second option would be to install a PVC ball valve between the skimmer and the pump and dial down the input a tad to see if that controls it better.

Sorry About the posts..... I didn't mean to do that. I got the Skimmer from the
Hidden Reef in Philadelphia. It was $150.00 skimmer, did I get Screwed? The Rio 1700 was the recommended pump. I will try the ball valve.
Thanks for the help

is this a in sump skimmer? if so how far down in the water do you have? if you got it all the way in the sump, try putting something under it and raise it up a few inches.

Ah yes that skimmer...I had one of those for a while, the original rio went to skimmer heaven (surprise surprise) The same exact thing happened to me when I bought a new one lol...It kinda stinks but I actually set it up backwards for it to work properly. I connected the Rio into the original drain and made the output the original input. That is how I plan on hooking it up again for it to work on my Uncles tank that I am setting up for them. Once I did that it actually worked ok. Not good by any means but it worked. Donno if that helps or not but I think the ball valve idea is your best bet.

Oh and water level never helped for me, I had the water level literally on the top of the pump and didnt do a thing. sorry man.

The only adjustment on this skimmer is by lowering/raising the output tube, very much like Euro-Reef's. I would gently push down on the pipe where the water exits the skimmer. This lowers the water/air mixture in the skimmer and will produce a drier product.
