I'm about to set up a 24"x12"x12" quanantine tank on a budget (blown all my dosh on the main tank ! oops !)

Do I really need a light on a QT ? (it's in a fairly well lit room) Or is it something I can do without ?

No need to have a light on it, however I would go and buy a cheap hood from Petsmart or PetCo so there is something over it. Just to keep the tank covered and add some light to it.

Yeah some people just use the ambient lighting in the room. Fish to be quarantined should be put under dim lights anyway.

Thats what I was thinking, i.e. they're stressed anyway, lighting might not help

Cheers :)
