Marine South had been offering Southdown for $5.99 a bag (40 lbs.). I had been in contact with then about ordering 6 to 8 bags and asked if they had plenty. They indicated 1000 bags. That was at the first of August. So, I now contact them about placing an order and guess what, the price is now $10.99 a bag. Their response when I asked what happened, "We raised the price. "

Seems they feel it is important to gouge us rather than offer a product at a fair price and hope to build a clientele. I know I won't ever buy from them!!!!!

Think about this if you should ever want to buy from them.

I'm not defending Marine South, I've had no dealings with them. However, if they were selling Southdown at $5.99 a bag, they were selling it close to their cost. You can't stay in business very long selling at or near cost. Also, they do have the right to raise their prices. Granted, they should not have told you the cost was $5.99 when it was really $10.99. At $10.99 a bag plus shipping, you can almost afford Aragamax. :rolleyes:I'm not trying to flame you, just my 2 cents for what its worth. :D

king1522,

You are absolutely right that they have the right to increase their price, but almost 100% . I don't know what they paid for it (do you?) but I see posts where people are buying it Home Depot for 3.99 (retail) for a 50 lbs. bag. http://saltaquarium.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?site=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.reefcentral.com%2Fmessageboard.htm

So, even if they paid retail (which I am sure they did not if they bought 1,000 40 lbs. bags), they were making more than 50% on their money at 5.99. Now they want more than 275%.

It is my understanding they are a startup .com and may have made a mistake charging $5.99. On the other hand, retail stores always have "lost Leaders" to get people in to their store where they might buy other things or become a regular customer. Further, it is better to sell 1,000 bags @ $5.99 rather than sit on 990 bags trying to sell it at $10.99. "Inventory" can costs you a lot of money, especially if you need cash flow to pay your bills.

By the way, they only sold 5 bags out of 1,000 on eBay at $5.99.

I wish them luck. However, they will not get any of my business.:D

When someone gets a bag or two all the way down to atlanta, it costs like $10 a bag because of the shipping, and you have to buy a whole pallet. For most people it isnt worth the hassle. Like me... I just went with aragamax (select). Just me though. Not talking about marinesouth or whoever. - perc
