I picked up some great looking green star polyps after the meeting on Sat. They started to open a little when I got them in my tank. But the next day they were shut tight and have remained so since. I started them mid-way down in my 90 under 2 x 175 MH. After a few days, I moved them down to the bottom on the sand... still not opening. Tank is full of zoo's, button polyps, leathers, and some new sps: all appear to be doing well. Water has been testing out ok. Kh is low at 8 - 9.

Any thoughts?

I got some GSPs that didn't open for 2 weeks and I was told it is not uncommon

My first Tan Star Polyps took 3 weeks to open and about 5 weeks to fully extend. Don't worry they will open after an adjustment period.

Jim

They're sensitive to aluminum oxide found in some phosphate-removing sponges and if you're adding iodine (using Lugol's) may also cause them not to open. Other than that, they're pretty tolerant of low to high lighting and varying water currents. I kept mine under pc's in the top of my tank under medium to strong current and noticed the polyps extended more. Their purple mats will spread like weeds over the rock in no time. Soon you'll be trading frags to get rid of them.......:)
