I just purchased a new 29g from Inland Reef a few weeks back. The tank has 2 bulkheads out the back the drain is 1" and the return is 3/4"..
The two holes drilled are as close to the top (black rim) as they could get it.

My question is how high do I keep the water level?

I cant submerge the drain or it will suck air and sound like farting...

Should the water level stay around 1/2 way up the drain bulkhead?

thanks

 He said farting!
Anyway. If you gaet the water flow stabilized just at the top of
the bulkhead, that should eliminate the noise you are encountering. Had similar noises from mine. Check out my
gallery. It shows a few pics of the water level in my display.
Actually, tonight I removed the 90degree elbow at the bulkhead
and that dropped the level to just above the bulhead. I wanted
to break the surface tension on the water a little more and by
having the water just above the bulhead I get a bit of a cyclone
of water there, removing more crud from the water surface.
Hope this wasn't too confusing.
