View Full Version : Alternative to loud X10 AM466 modules?

Those of you using the AM466 modules know how loud they are whenever they switch on or off.
Is there an alternative out there that isn't as loud? ie: Honeywell or X10Pro?
I can't believe that they have to be this loud... my digital timers are completely silent when they switch. Why can't x10 modules be that way?

I have modified two of my modules as I use them as a wavemaker and they turn on and off every two minutes. Here is the Link (http://www.geocities.com/ido_bartana/modifying_lamp_module.htm#Modification%20to%20a%20silent%20appliance%20module) to do the mod. It took me about 15 minutes to do it.

If you’re not comfortable modifying your modules check out this link: http://www.smarthome.com/2002S.html
I just purchased a couple of these modules and they’re much quieter.

How do you address those modules? There's no switch that I could see....

It looks like these modules are programmed electronically. You hold a "set" button, then send a house/unit code from the controller. The module uses the first address that it finds on the line as its address. You then have to send an on or off command to enable or disable the local control. I don't have one, I just looked at the manual. Anybody tried one of these yet?

Northbay,
I checked out that link, however it only talks about silencing the LM465 Lamp Module. Is the same process involved when one wants to silence a AM466 Module?
Thanks.

I wonder how they would work w/an ACII? Regardless, I don't use 'em for wavemaking so they don't really click on/off that often for me. It doesn't seem worth 2xthe price of a regular mod...

Smarthome has a quieter appliance module (2002shl). I have two on my tank controlling the fluorescent lights. They are much quieter than the AM466 modules. Not completely silent but very quiet. Just a soft click not the loud click that draws attention.
Heres the link:

WantABigTank,
Are you using them with an Aquacontroller? How did you go about programming the channels?
North bay 101,
With this modification, are they completely silent? No clicking at all?

No controller. Only a x10 timer. Also have two sets of miraclebeam hi-lites trying simulate the moon. Each is on it's own x10 lamp module. One set green and one set blue. Both set come on just before the flouresents go off. A few hours later the greens turn off leaving the less bright blues on. A few more hours and the blues turn off for total darkness.
It's a pretty nice affect and interesting to see different fish behavior through the cycle. Note that my tank is fish only.

Tang_man,
The modification to the X-10 modules is completly quiet. It uses a solid state relay instead of the mechanical relay.
By making the mod to a lamp module it makes it an appliance type relay. You can purchase larger amperage relays to control other more powerful appliances.

To make a quiet X-10 module, the modification is done to a lamp module. This will make the modified lamp module act like a quiet appliance type module. You can turn things on and off without making a sound.

the clicking is not comming from my lamp moduce it is comming from the reciever that came with the firecracker kit. Can this reciever be modified the same way?

Scott, check the address of the receiver module, I bet it is set for the same address as one of your appliance modules. Here is my directions "with pic's" for the silent mod to a lamp module.
X10 Lamp module modification (http://mysite.verizon.net/res1fl57/id11.html)
You can't do the same mod to an appliance module, but this effectively makes the lamp module an appliance module. If you want the ground that the appliance module has, put the guts of the lamp module into the appliance module case, they fit just fine.

I bought 3 of the 2002SHL PLC ApplianceLinc Modules. They work fine with an AQ2. They only cost $14 each. I looked at the mod to make my existing appl mod silent and between the price of the parts and the time it just didn't seem worth it.
The Smarthome ones work fine, there is a slight click, but hardly noticeable. Easy to set up with the AQ2, put the module in learn mode and issue a on command from the AQ2. That it, it's programmed.
