Is anyone else getting a little flustered at some peoples insistance on calling clowns "nemos"? Its annoying when they ask a question and say "I have 2 nemos". Wow thats great for you. Are they percs, tomatos, maroons, what? Nemo doesn't tell us anything and its getting on my nerves.

Tell me about it! I can never go to a fish store now without someone saying "Nemo"

or "Dory"......Last time i was at the LFS a kid asked what that that plant was(anemone), next thing i knew the LFS employee was trying to get him to say it, that was funny......the kid was only like 9 or 10.

I don't see the big deal. Most people aren't interested in the proper names anyway and would have some other generic description for them. At least Nemo or Dory give us hobbyists a likely place to start rather than guessing what "a blue fish" might be ;)

Well first of all, if it's a little kid saying it, who cares. They are kids. Let them be. You probably would've said the same if the movie came out when you were a kid. I have a slight problem if they're older and still saying it. Haha. But when people say nemo they're almost always talking about percula, whether ocellaris or true perc.

Whoooaaaa you folks with the foreign object lodged in your nether regions should take a breath. Reef keeping is supposed to be fun and relaxing....I'm worried about your health...your high blood pressure is going to cause that blood vessel in your forehead to burst. Let people be...if you are so upset by such non-issues, what must happen to you when you have a real problem? Its just goofy, its not a crime. RELAX!!!

Reefboy, I see where you're coming from... But when you think about it, because of the whole 'nemo' thing, lots of fish will probably be purchased and not properly taken care of.
On a similar note, if you don't think of things like that and have the attitude of just let people do what they want, then there would be no tang police, people would be buying anemones for their clowns, I mean 'nemos', in their system 6's etc....
I certainly don't lose sleep over it, but I think that it just shows how knowing what some of the effects of this nemo/dory talk may be is what makes some of us upset.

It does bother me a bit, but not too much. Some adults do say it too much, like my dad's friends came over for the superbowl party, and they were like LOOK he has two Nemo's!!! My dad's gf is always calling them nemo's... If they want to be correct with the movie at all it'd be Flo & Marlin! (lol) (right?, that's marlins spouse's name right?)
What was kinda funny was yesterday some 6-7 year old was at the LFS, and he was calling a Imperator Angel a 'Dory' ... and the mother was like "yes dear, thats dory"

Mike D,
I see you point about the welfare of the animals and in that regard I agree 100% (by the way...thanks for being cordial...I was waiting to be thrown into the pits of the firy furnace :)). I think a lot of people these days are just easily annoyed by everybody else. People need to care for their animals properly and know what it is they have and how to take care of it...but hey if ya wanna call your anemone "Fluffy" then so be it.
Best Regards,
Steve

hahaha. no. flo is the (i believe) 4 stripe damsel in the tank. the one who was crazy and thought her reflection was her sister or something. coral is nemo's mom. hahaha. but why was marlin bigger than coral? hmm... and then once coral died, marlin should have become nemo's mom... then nemo would grow up to be a man and reproduce with his once dad but now wife?

You would not believe how often I have seen this with Yellow-tailed damsels and a purple tang. I gave up trying to correct them unless they are seriously looking at getting into SW tanks.

Ok, completely off the subject. Richdragon, I love your avatar. Is that a picture from your tank? What kind of anemone is that?

It just annoys me for some reason. Overall I don't think the movie was a good thing for saltwater fish hobby. Who knows how many hapless perc clowns are going to die a slow, painful death in some 8 year olds fish bowl...

I think in a way that it's good for the hobby and kids. We had some friends over and their 3 year old boy came running to my tank saying "you have a nemo!!". He got to the tank, looked around and said "do you have a dory?".
I thought it was cute and amazing that a 3 year old had such an interest in the fish and actually knew that.

A few weeks ago at the lfs, there was a little boy sitting on the floor paging through a children's book about fish. On the cover was written 'employee training book'. I don't know if it was funny or scary.

Stop complaining - if you're referring to A. ocellaris as "false percula", you're half of the problem. That makes as much sense as calling a horse a "false zebra". "Nemo" is as valid as "true percula". If you want to be anal, at least use latin names.

Ya I dont think me refering to ocellaris as false percs is nearly as confusing as someone calling every single clown species, from tomatos to maroons, "nemos".
TheUltimateNoob

Alright teevee. First of all, just shut up. If you read above, you'd know that I'm not one of the people that's complaining! I was the one defending those people so maybe you should try learning how to read. I said false percula because that is how they are describe almost anywhere you go. Wow, you're so sophisticated by using latin names. Good for you. Kind of hypocritical that your first words are stop complaining and you in turn are complaining and getting on the backs of people who use "true percula" as opposed to the scientific name.

ah jeez its not that bad them little kids calling all the clowns "nemos", its bad when the LFS who sells them tells them you can keep them like a goldfish and the parent plunks "nemo" in a fish bowl and whamo dead clown. Maybe people aren't that bad here in the US , but it happened over 500 times in Japan. Another reason for an A-bomb on japan, Nemo commands it.

WOW! Monkeyprof, you are one ignorant fool. I don't know if you meant that or if it was a joke. But in either case, that was uncalled for.
