Why can't calcium reactors be made out of PVC? If it could be then that would cut cost to under $50 including pump.

You can, mine is made from Clear 4" PVC. You can see it in this pic.

whats the advantage to being able to see into a reactor? Can't you tell by looking down into the reactor if the media is running out?

Actually, I've seen DIY Ca reactors made with only PVC.

I'm in the process of making my own DIY Kalkwasser reactor out of 4" PVC.

It's dark in there !!!!

Seriously though, yes it just makes it easy to monitor for level, compaction, etc. I have seen some DIYs built with regular PVC.
