I have this one polyp that has spit out a bunch of stringy brown stuff. I used a turkey baster to suck it out of it's center "mouth"
And then a few minutes later more came out. It's like a dark brown colored stringy stuff.

Is this normal?

It almost looks as if this was the zoo's "tongue" and it's sticking it far out to catch food.

ok now the polyp has been completely retracted for the last 2 hours. It has also shrunk. Is it dying?

another one of my polyps in a different colony is spitting out this brown stringy stuff too. Dammit!

sounds like they're shedding excess zooxanthellae algae.
are these zoo's new or have you recently switched lights?

My LPS's do this with their zooxanthellae and exibit the exact same behaviour. After they expell they look like their on their way out for a few hrs and then by the next light cycle they look great. Never seen any of my Zoa's do this but I see it with all of LPS's.

Interesting...

These Zoos have been in my tank for over 4 months. The reason there is only one isolated polyp is because I wanted to move the colony onto higher light, and I didn't know that one of the polyps had already spread to a new rock, so I had to rip it apart.

Thx :D
i've had new zoo's spit up their algae, but not
after they've been in my systems for any length of time.
you can prolly expect a color change, usually to the brown side (IME)
how old are your bulbs? maybe the spectrum has shifted.

Do you feed your zoas? Mine do this occasionally but I do try to target feed them several times a week. I'd like to think they are just expelling waste.

i was thinking the same thing as mr_alberta... sounds like they're taking a dump to me.

say i've ever seen mine eat, my Protopalythoa sp.
zoo's chow, but not my Zoanthus sp. have you
actually seen them eat & what are you feeding?

most zoos are very slow eaters. it depends on the zoos though.

Sorry for the late reply. I feed my zoas freeze dried cyclopeeze. Not all of my zoas eat however, just 2 colonies. I just soak the cyclopeeze in tank water and turkey baste a little bit of it in the general direction of the zoas.

So, the brown stringy thing is waste?

Is that photo really a of a zoanthid? I have never seen them with the long stalk like that. I don't think that is a zoanthid.

Ok. I thought those were different species (like palythoa or others), not zoanthids. Any experts out there to comment?

they were hitchhikers on a yellow polyps rock in my friends tank. they weren't in a spot with good light and until we propagated them and saw them in my tank close up we thought they were palythoa too. reaching for light may be the cause.

My pink zoa sometimes spit out brown stringy stuff.

I've witnessed the same after feedings from various corals, I've always assumed it's waste.
