I have a 125gal. AGA. I need to build a stand. The problem is I can't decide if I should use 4x4's or 2x4's. The GARF site recommends 2x4's, but i'm concerned they won't be strong enough. Please help me decide.

From what i have heard 4x4's have a tendency to twist. I used doubled up 2x4's instead. I am not a carpenter by anymeans, but have built many stands and have always just used 2x4's.
My 2 cents........

Store bought stands are much less than 2x4's.. 2x4's or 4x4's or doubled up 2x4's will be plenty.

2x4's will work fine. I have a 125 gallon. 72x18x24 I built the stand for. 250lbs sand and 250+ lbs rock. Pay attention to what you are doing and butt the joints correctly you won't have any problems. Double up some of the 2x4's for the added support/bracing. Glue & Screw too.

One suggestion I wish I would have thought about before I finished mine was to put doors on the sides. I have 4 of them on the front. I could have put a 55 gallon sump in there then instead of a 20 long if I could open the sides.
Good Luck...

I used 2x4 on my 125g stand as well. I used the garf plans as well.

My 120 (48x24x24) cabinet is made with 3/4" oak plywood. Seems to hold just fine. (Ignore the loud crash)
