Hey I purchased my first soft coral and I was wondering if it is normal for star polyp's to close up at night after the lights go out?? Thanx for the help.

Mine do it all the time, and they still grow like weeds :-)

cool, I was just wondering. The "growing like weeds" part I dont mind :) They are quite pleasant to look at.

Yep, I've got three varieties of GSP's and they all close up every night. One colony also stays closed for a day or two after a partial water change.

mine are most often closed shortly after lights out, but at times they will stay open all night.

Mine is a green star polyp. It stays open all day and is growing well. It took it two days to open at all after I got it. I have not had a problem with hermits eating mine but you never know. I think hermits kind of follow the crowd. My friend had his hermits eat one of his sponges after it being in the tank for months.
